The PMC wants the opposition leader to explain his stand in the next one week, given that the general election is around the corner.
GEORGE TOWN: A Malay-based NGO, Penang Malay Congress (PMC), wants Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim to clarify his statement on “Israel security” and on whether Pakatan Rakyat planned to turn the country into a republic.
As Pakatan’s de facto leader, PMC president Rahmad Isahak said it was imperative for Anwar to publicly explain his stand in the next one week, given that the general election could be called anytime soon.
Rahmad said Anwar must clarify on why the Wall Street Journal should not be sued over the article that quoted him as saying that he supported the security arrangement to protect Israel.
PAS spiritual leader and Kelantan Menteri Besar Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat had also called on Anwar, the PKR supremo, to either retract the support or sue WSJ over misreporting.
Rahmad said since the report had evoked widespread criticisms among Malay-Muslim leaders, it was only appropriate for Anwar to give a logical and rational clarification without delay.
“Any delay will only cause negative impact and affect his popularity as a political leader in the country.
“Hence he would be found guilty in the public court beyond reasonable doubt,” Rahmad said in his e-statement here today.
Touching on PAS outcast Hasan Ali’s statement on the so-called Pakatan’s republic plan, Rahmad said Anwar must also explain the contentious matter.
He said Anwar must explain whether Pakatan will amend Article 153 of the Federal Constitution that upheld the constitutional monarchy system in Malaysia.
“The people are the real boss and they are getting tired over constant politicking that does not benefit them at all.
“Anwar must clarify within the next seven days to put to rest all these controversial issues,” he said.
Indian hero
Meanwhile, PMC secretary Mohd Noor Mohd Abdul Kader blasted Penang Umno Youth chief Shaik Hussein Mydin for trying to be an Indian hero by criticising the DAP internal disciplinary proceedings against the embattled Deputy Chief Minister II P Ramasamy.
“It seems Shaik Hussein cares more about Indian plight than the Penang Malays,” Mohd Noor said in a statement.
Shaik Hussain yesterday claimed the disciplinary proceedings against Ramasamy proved that Indians were marginalised in DAP.
Mohd Noor said Shaik Hussein’s interference in Indian affairs showed that Umno was bankrupt of political ideas.
Instead of interfering in other people’s problems, he said Shaik Hussein should focus on wooing back lost Malay support to Umno.
“Since he had failed to do so, Shaik Hussein should quit his post gracefully,” he added.
